Paddling Gear
   (Featuring Kokatat Watersports Wear)

Kokatat

Backcountry Outfitters is proud to announce that we are now a Kokatat Watersports Wear premeire dealer! Kokatat is well known for their quality paddling clothing and accessories, as well as their strong partnership with Gore-Tex. Kokatat and W.L Gore and Associates have a long history of collaboration. Many fabric manufacturers claim that their products are comparable or superior, but after years of manufacturing, Kokatat continues to use Gore-Tex technology because, over the long haul, there is nothing better.

Kokatat offers fabrics with high abrasion resistance, superior tear strength, light weight, suppleness, water-shedding ability and good looks. For those of you using your Kokatat gear along the coast, you'll be happy to hear that salt water does not harm Gore-Tex or affects its performance in any way. This is because the crystals are much too large to clog the pores in the Gore-Tex membrane.

Kokatat also has an excellent selection of women's specific paddling clothing, actually built to fit the female body. Women's Kokatat tops have a narrower cut in the shoulders which reduces bulk and increases mobility. Sleeve and torso lengths are shorter and hips are fuller with a longer rise to accommodate a woman's build. There is no reason to settle for a scaled down men's size and an inferior fit. Women also have the option to special order a drop seat for their dry suit if interested.

Even with gender specific cuts, some folks may need a little tweaking for their dry suits to fit just right. A garment that fits poorly can start with discomfort and end in disappointment. Leaks and abrasion are often caused by poor fit. Both men and women can customize Kokatat dry suits to their specifications. Since every Kokatat dry suit is made by hand in California, you have the option to modify your suit to fit your needs and body build. We can add reflective tape, a sleeve pocket, Gore-Tex socks, shorten sleeves, lengthen rises and more! No other paddle clothing company can offer these alterations.

As a kokatat premeire dealer we promise you an exceptional shopping experience. We carry a comprehensive in-stock selection of products, both clothing and PFDs, all year long. We don't stock every item Kokatat builds, but we are happy to special order anything from their complete line. We provide 3-day special order service on all standard Kokatat orders (does not include custom orders or alterations) and we will drop ship to your location at no additional charge. Our staff is trained to help you select the alterations needed to give you a custom fit (additional charge for alterations). We accept government, institutional, guide and professional use orders. Please call our US-31 location at 231-941-1100 for details.

Lake Superior
Lake Superior is cold most of the year

When paddling it is always best to dress for the water temperature, not the temperature of the air. Especially in the spring and fall; it is very possible to see air temperatures in the 50's and 60's and yet have water temperatures that are in the 30's and 40's. In the event of a swim, hypothermia can set in quickly unless you are dressed appropriately for the water: be it with a wetsuit, drysuit, or paddling top. At Backcountry, we sell all the Kokatat gear you need to keep you warm and (more importantly) safe, along with the knowledge you need to ensure that you can keep paddling when most other people would leave their boats in the garage.
