Winter Camping

Setting up camp in the dark!
Setting up camp after dark

There is a saying around the store that can often be heard when the weather turns nasty: "there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad equipment"  We try to take that saying to heart and keep on playing outside through all 4 seasons. There are many activities that we enjoy that most people would not participate in once the snow flies. With the proper knowledge and gear, anyone can enjoy their favorite activities throughout the winter months.

Recently, some of our staff headed out into the snowy woods for a night of camping in sub zero temperatures. Winter camping can be more challenging than camping in the summer due to the extreme cold, but with the proper precautions it is a lot of fun. The best way to get the proper information on what you need to keep camping all year round is the sign up for one of our winter camping classes, or just swing in to one of our locations and one of our staff would be happy to explain what equipment you may need, as well as give you some of our favorite tips and tricks.

The advantages to camping in the winter are; you dont have to pay campground fees at most established campgrounds in the winter, you have your choice of campsites, there are no noisy neighbors and best of all there are no bugs! There are a number of other good campgrounds in the area that would make great places the camp, but most are not plowed, the state park on east bay is open year round, but most of us prefer exploring and finding our own places to make camp. A Michigan DNR office is a great place to start looking for state lands and get the appropriate permits to camp on them.
